| Applications are the physical embodiment of models. |
 |
Where a statistical or mathematical model is likely to be used in an ongoing, operational role rather than for analysis alone, it is usually deployed as an ‘application’. Deploying a model in this way requires the design of an appropriate interface that controls and supports the user experience in an efficient manner.
Other problems or models may be simpler—such as automating the processing of data—but still require distribution to multiple users and implementation into a wider operational framework. Implementation may require documentation, training and extensive testing of the application.
White Kite has experience and skills in the deployment of models and other operational tools as packaged applications. We typically embed these models in Microsoft Excel with supporting code in Visual Basic for Applications (VBA) and Visual Basic (VB).
Virtually any of the models that we develop for risk modelling purposes can be deployed in a robust, application format. We develop a set of interfaces that allow the application user to interact with the underlying model in a logical, efficient and controlled manner.
As a case in point, a recent White Kite project involved the migration of a complex forecasting package away from a legacy code into a more flexible, transparent Excel framework. Several thousand lines of legacy code were translated from the original system into Excel using VBA, replicating the core functionality (forecast simulations) and improving the usability by orders of magnitude.
We are also skilled in the development of large, intricate Excel-based applications that combine elements of simulation and optimisation. These applications can be built as stand-alone, distributable platforms with an interface that ensures usability across a broad audience. |
